What To Do After A Fire
- Limit how much you walk around the home or business to prevent smoke particles and soot from being embedded into various materials and surfaces.
- Keep hands clean to prevent secondary contamination to other non-affected surfaces especially walls and wood work surfaces.
- Lay out clean towels or clean linens on rugs, upholstery and carpeted high traffic areas.
- If electricity if Off in the property empty all refrigerators and freezers and prop open the doors for proper air flow.
- Coat all chrome surfaces with a light coating of vaseline / petroleum jelly for protection.
- Wash all houseplants on both sides of leaves for soot.
- Clean your HVAC Filter housing and change the filter.
- Use masking tape to cover all air registers with double layered cheese cloth.
What NOT To Do After A Fire
- Do not attempt to wash any walls or painted surfaces or clean carpets or upholstery without first contacting your SERVPRO professional technicians.
- Do not clean any appliances that were near the fire epicenter, heat or water with consulting with an authorized repair service professional.
- Do not use any canned/packaged food or beverages that may have been stored near the fire, heat or water.
- Do not turn on any ceiling fixtures if the ceiling is wet due to the potential for overheard wiring to be damaged.
- Do not send garments to the dry cleaners or laundry because improper cleaning may set the smoke odor.
