Louisiana Universities Marine Consortium calls on SERVPRO following Hurricane IDA

On August 29th much of the coastal regions of south Louisiana took major damage but the area known as Cocodrie, LA took some of the worst damage in the state’s history by taking the category 4 hurricane straight on. In Cocodrie, La there is a place called the Louisiana Universities Marine Consortium and it looks like a real live space station on earth. LUMCON as it is known is actually a research laboratory that uses education and outreach to enable the next generation of marine scientists and ocean literate citizens. LUMCON also builds and expands collaborations among marine scientists across Louisiana by removing barriers and providing tools that bolster scientific investigation. LUMCON is a Louisiana state treasure to say the very least and at SERVPRO of East Baton Rouge we were honored and privileged to get the call from them to help them restore their facility after such a devastating loss.
I turned out that LUMCON had very formidable structures and engineering to minimize the affect of major hurricanes and storms but one of those preventative measure failed and that was the storm shudders. During Hurricane Ida the storm shudders in front of many of the windows failed to prevent the wind and water from entering the building through various seams in the building. The result was a large intrusion of water in various spots throughout the facility which caused major water damage to the dorm rooms, living areas and laboratory facilities as well.
Project Manger Louis Bergeron was brought in to identify and interpret the damage and then help build a scope of work to remediate all non-salvageable building materials and then dry the remainder of the building. Mr. Bergeron worked with a labor staff of 85 individuals to not only get out all of the damaged materials but clean and dry-out out the remaining portions of the facility to IICRC standards. The project was one for the record books and was completed in record time and with the highest level of professionalism and craftsmanship. LUMCON will be back good as new after the reconstruction process is completed in early 2022.
